Clonmel Cycling Club

The Sunday Spin

The new year has brought entuasiasim and some new faces to the Sunday Spin. Amongst those new faces is our first female cyclist Verona, who has adapted quickly into the group and is enjoying the spins immensely. This weeks spin was 50km, taking twenty two of us along the shadow of Slievenamon to Glenbower where we turned right for  Lisadobber and onto Faugheen, with one or two natural breaks along the way. One of the most important things in sport and excercise is hydration, so plenty of liquid is consumed during our spins. Of course all this drinking of fluids has an effect on the body and the usual thing happens, " a natural break ". Difficult and crude at the best of times whilst out in our beautiful countryside, but try climbing a gate in Lycra and cycling shoes, a task to say the least. It's also probably a frightening sight for the animals in the field, to see a Mamil ( middle aged man in Lycra ) clad in bright colours, scaling a gate like it's mount Everest. But it has to be done in the name of common decency.
Onwards to Faugheen and a call for some good bike handling skills to safely navigate through the rush for Sunday mass. Safely through the faithful and onwards to Carrick on Suir in a stiff 30 kph southeasterly wind. Right through Carrick and home along the main road with the headwind turned to a tailwind, blowing us along at an effortless average of 30kph. Through Kilsheelan village, home to club stalwart Paul, who made a welcome return to the group this week after a lengthy absence due to injury. Onwards to Clonmel and a welcome end to a 50km Sunday morning spin.

However, it wasn't the end of the spin for some, as due to the increasing fitness levels of people, 50km is too short for some. So Declan and six others carried on for another 40 km. The lads are flying, and it's a strong rumour that Declan is returning to race this season, with the added motivation of the Veteran national championships being held in Clonmel in June, why not ?

Clonmel Cycling Club

Another year is upon us and people have swept away the cobwebs of 2011 and the excesses of Christmas. The resolutions are now in force, but how long will they last ? If your aim is to get fit or fitter, then come join us every Sunday morning at 10 a.m in Tesco car park and cycle 40 km in 2 hours. For safety reasons no flat bar bikes can be used, only road bikes.

Santa has been and hopefully delivered all you wished for, but Santa came early to Clonmel Cycling club when it was confirmed earlier in the year that we were to host the 2012  National Cycling Championships. A four day racing spectacular that will attract all of Ireland's top cyclists male & female into Clonmel to compete for the coveted green and white National Champions jersey. Top of the list of competitors are Ireland's elite world tour professionals, Nicholas Roche ( son of Stephen Roche, Ireland's winner of the Tour de France ), Daniel Martin, who is a nephew of Stephen's and finished ninth overall in the 2011 world tour rankings and Matt Brammier, current National elite champion. Joining them will be Carrick on Suir's rising talent Sam Bennett, who currently rides for the An Post Sean Kelly team based in Belgium. Sam will have his eyes firmly fixed on the under 23 national title and what a treat it would be for his flock of local supporters to see him don the green and white jersey on the winners podium in O' Connell street on Sunday 24th June. Another Carrick on Suir native to keep an eye on is Martin O' Loughlin, who will compete for the Vets over 40 title. Martin is no stranger to this garment as he has won it twice in the past four years and rumour has it that he's training even harder than usual this winter.

So with the Sunday Spin back and running well, the National Championships in June, the Suir Valley 3 day racing its way around Clonmel and South Tipperary on the August bank holiday weekend, next Christmas will be a well earned restful one.

Club Notes

The Sunday Spin

"The community spirit is gone".The statement on every one's lips these days. Not so on Clonmel Cycling club's Sunday Spin, as was evident to all this week when Frank arrived before the start proclaiming that he had forgotten his cycling shoes. In jumped Sean to the rescue, immediately offering him a spare pair from home. Further evidence of our motto " we never leave anyone behind ". Well done Sean !!

Even though there was a westerly wind blowing we headed east from Clonmel with a tailwind along the Kilkenny road, where we encountered our first of three punctures. Puncture one repaired, the group rode onwards to Dempsey's cross where we turned right heading in the direction of Ballyneale. Left before Ballyneale, mud spraying from the rear wheels onto the riders behind, who on reaching Lisadobber resembled victims of a poorly attempted spray tanning session. Crossing the road at Lisadobber our next destination was Faugheen, home of the famous Faugheen 50 motor cycle race. Left through Faugheen and forward to Carrick On Suir.

With the ever present thought of turning for home into a headwind, group leader Declan decided to cross the bridge into Carrickbeg and head home along the back road from Carrick to Clonmel. Up along Coolnamuck road rising as we attempted to get some shelter the legs getting tired, with the slow rise up through Glen,( home to the Rosminian retreat of Glencomeragh ) on some peoples mind. Past Glencomeragh, praying for the pain to end, but realising that we're nearly home, keeping us going. Dropping down into Gurteen Upper, pop, another puncture.Yours truly, the club P.R.O was the victim. Instructing the group to ride on, as we were only 10km from home, thankfully the chairman said no "we never leave anyone behind" and stayed with me. A great promoter of technology, I had recently decided to remove the pump from the bike and purchase an air filled miniature canister to inflate the tube after a puncture. The tyre pulled from the wheel, new inner tube fitted and the new gadget attached ready to inflate. Press the button, a gush of air and bang. I'd burst the new tube.Typical paddy, now was a good time to read the instruction manual. Second tube, supplied by the chairman, installed and inflated by the old reliable pump, back on the bike and off towards Clonmel we both headed.

Determined to yet again prove the club motto of not leaving anyone behind, group leader Declan had delivered the rest of the group to Clonmel and cycled back out to collect myself and the chairman. Thanks Dec !! Once more, a great Sunday Spin. Roll on next Sunday, 10am Tesco car park.

" The Sunday Spin "

What is there to do on a winter Sunday morning ? Get out for a cycle with Clonmel CC of course. We meet each Sunday morning at 10 in the Tesco car park. A few requirements when you come along, a helmet, puncture repair kit/spare tube, something to drink and most importantly a road bike.Unfortunately, no flat bar or mountain bikes, due to safety concerns.

Sunday last saw a cool damp start to the day, but it didn't deter the hardy cyclists who turned out for the Sunday Spin. After some debate it was decided to take the group on a route which would give shelter from the stiff blowing westerly  wind. Leaving Clonmel via the convent bridge we headed for Knocklofty along the wood road where group leader Declan punctured. But in the true spirit of cycling and reiterating the comment made recently by Declan " Like the navy seals, we don't leave anyone behind ", we waited for him to return to the group before continuing on." Knocklofty hill " was the flurry of conversation as we drew ever closer to the beast, but to everyone's delight we turned left before it and headed towards Newcastle. But a little surprise was in store for all, as Declan had decided to test our bike skills by taking us onto a secondary country road. The Hell of the North " Paris Roubaix ", a famous bike race held in northern France each spring and considered to be the toughest one day race in the world, which was won on two occasions by the great Sean Kelly, was compared to the 4 km stretch we cycled before arriving at Keatings cross and onwards to Ardfinnan.

Left in Ardfinnan and with a welcome tailwind encouraging us along we were now heading to Newcastle where we were greeted by rain. Shorter than the previous Sunday but enduring wintry conditions, all were delighted to turn left in Newcastle and head for the locally known " Bee Hive " on the Clonmel Dungarvan road. But before reaching the Solace of the Dungarvan road there was one final 100 metre kicker on the road. As the phrase might suggest, a kicker is a sharp unexpected increase in the terrain which can kick the wind from your sail and dig into your energy reserve, which for some it did. But with a flattening road providing some recovery onwards we pedalled, onto the Dungarvan road and cruising down Knock na Mullig into Kilmanahan.

Nearly home, nearly home, a warm shower, dinner, relaxing Sunday evening, the thoughts that run through every cyclists head as they near the end of a Sunday cycle and often the impetus to get you over the final km's. One last drag from Kilmanahan to Russellstown cross and it was down hill to the finger post and into Clonmel. The Sunday Spin and excitement was over for another week, but it wasn't. While he must be complimented for his enthusiasm, the club chairman must realise that he's no longer a teenager and that track stands should be left to the pro's, especially whilst stopped at traffic lights in full view of the public. Down he went like a tonne of bricks, falling, bike and all with both feet clipped onto the pedals. Rising faster than a Phoenix, back off the ground and sitting onto the saddle with a grin on his face. A laugh by all and a fun end to the Sunday Spin.

" The Sunday Spin "29th November

Sunday last saw the the return of the clubs Sunday morning cycle. The morning was bright & fresh with over a dozen cyclists setting off on route to Cahir into a strong westerly wind ,where they turned left and headed for Ardfinnan. As there were several new faces on the cycle, Declan ( club secretary ) decided to stop in Ardfinnan for a brief chat on cycling safety and general do's and dont's while cycling in a group. Onwards to Goatenbridge chatting and enjoying the fabulous views on offer and ignoring the twinges in the leg muscles, knowing that the pain would be worth it in the end. Left in Goatenbridge, and with the wind to our backs the road felt smooth and inviting as we headed for Newcastle, all feeling like pro's. Frank remarked of the calming effect that looking down at the road had on him km after km, pleased that he had come along for the cycle." It's the best bug there is", remarked Declan, "the cycling bug" and it's the only bug around that improves your health.

Straight through Newcastle heading back to Clonmel, with the welcome tailwind blowing us all the way. Reaching Kilmanahan, Declan pulled the group over to the road side to inform us all that we were now cycling along a section of the circuit for the 2012 Irish National Cycling Championships, providing us with some very interesting insider knowledge of the sport & route. Back on the saddle and onwards reaching Clonmel after 2.5 hours, slightly longer than anticipated both in time and distance, but on the first spin this is to be expected as we gauge peoples fittness. So for all the new faces, Frank, John, Brian, Pat, Mark and his son Colm, don't be put off and not return, this weeks Sunday Spin will be easier and shorter. See you all and more, Sunday Morning at Tesco's car park for 10am.
